What to Do After a Storm

If you've just been hit by a hailstorm or severe wind event, your first moves matter. Here's what to do—and what not to do—in the hours immediately following the damage.

Document Everything

Take photos and video of all visible damage from the ground — your roof, siding, eavestroughs, vehicles, deck, and landscaping. Note the date and approximate time of the storm. This documentation is the single most important piece of information for an insurance claim.

Prevent Further Damage

If your roof is actively leaking, call us immediately for emergency tarping. Insurance policies require homeowners to “mitigate loss” — meaning delays in addressing active leaks or water intrusion may affect portions of a claim. Move valuables away from leak areas.

Understand Your Policy

Locate your home insurance documents and check for any hail-specific deductibles or coverage limitations (RCV vs. ACV). Don’t file a claim before getting a professional inspection — we’ll meet you on-site and document everything thoroughly.

Do not climb on a damaged roof.

Compromised shingles, weakened decking, and hidden hazards make post-storm roofs extremely dangerous. Leave the inspection to certified professionals with proper safety equipment.

THE Advanced Level Roofing DIFFERENCE

You Don't Have to Face the Adjuster Alone.

Most roofers fix the roof. We do that, and we go further. ALR acts as your expert representative throughout the entire insurance process, ensuring no damage is overlooked and no necessary line item is missed.

We meet your adjuster on-site. We use the same estimating software (Xactimate) that they use. And when the initial estimate is missing required components—drip edge, ice-and-water shield, or full decking replacement—we file supplements to request the additional funds needed for a proper, code-compliant restoration.

The Calgary insurance reality:

  • The August 2024 hailstorm generated over 130,000 claims and $3.25 billion in losses, making it the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history. Many homeowners discovered their policies had quietly shifted to Actual Cash Value (ACV) coverage, leaving them tens of thousands of dollars short. We help you understand exactly what your policy covers before you're standing on the lawn with an adjuster.

FROM TARP TO FINAL INSPECTION

The Advanced Level Roofing Storm Restoration Process

A clear, systematic approach designed to take the chaos out of post-storm recovery. From the moment you call us to the moment your warranty activates, you have a single point of contact and a documented plan.

01 | Emergency Tarping & Damage Assessment

If your roof is actively leaking, we deploy within 24 hours to install a professional emergency tarp — protecting your home's interior while satisfying your insurer's "mitigate loss" requirement. We then conduct a full multi-point assessment, documenting every damage point with high-resolution photography.

02 | Insurance Claim Support & Scope Agreement

We meet your insurance adjuster on-site, walk them through every damaged area, and ensure the scope of work meets local building codes. If the initial estimate is insufficient, we file supplements to secure the funds required for a proper, code-compliant restoration.

03 | IKO-Certified Material Selection

As an IKO Craftsman Premier Installer, we work with you to select the right shingle for the next storm including upgraded Class 4 impact-resistant options like the IKO Nordic, which can qualify your home for insurance premium discounts and is engineered for significantly greater impact resistance than standard shingles.

04 | Expert Installation & Site Cleanup

Most projects are completed in a single day. Tarps protect your landscaping. Dump trailers contain debris immediately. Industrial magnetic sweep across the entire yard at completion. Your dedicated project representative coordinates every crew on site.

What Storm Damage Customers Say

JOHN D. , Calgary

Yesterday I had my roof replaced by a team from Advanced Level Roofing. True professionals who know what they do. I saw them working on houses around me for two years now and their jobs look awesome. You can see other companies dragging a roof job on for days, but these guys try their best to do it in one day and that was the case for me. The whole process from estimate to installation was a breeze. The price was fair and the estimator answered all my questions. When dusk set in, they were gone and everything was clean and nice around the house. The roof looks awesome. As much as I like what you've done, I don't want to see you again for the next 20 years or so!

MARISA R. , Tuscany, NW Calgary

My roof was barely 8 years old when the 2024 hailstorm hit, and I assumed insurance would cover everything. Advanced Level Roofing sat down with me, walked through my policy line by line, and pointed out an ACV endorsement I didn't even know I had. They negotiated with the adjuster on the upgrade to Class 4 shingles. New roof, smaller out-of-pocket than I expected, and zero stress.

Veer Mistry , Calgary

Had a leak and called around these folks actually picked up and came the next day. Fixed it quick, no fuss. Ended up booking them for a full redo. Solid choice.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Identifying Hail & Wind Damage

Most hail damage is invisible from the ground. Wind damage often hides until the next storm. Here's what trained eyes look for during a professional post-storm inspection.

Bruised or Fractured Shingles

Hail impacts fracture the fibreglass matting beneath the shingle’s surface. The damage often isn’t visible from a distance — but a tactile inspection reveals soft, dented spots that compromise structural integrity. Untreated, these areas shed granules rapidly and lead to leaks within 6–12 months.
Visible cue: Granule loss in eavestrough and downspouts

Lifted or Missing Shingles

Wind uplift breaks the adhesive seal between shingle layers, lifting tabs or tearing them off entirely. Even shingles that appear intact may have failed adhesives — exposing the underlayment to the next storm. One of the most common storm-related failures we see.
Visible cue: Missing shingle tabs in your yard

Dented Soft Metals

Eavestroughs, downspouts, fascia, vent caps, and window cladding are often the first visible evidence of a serious hailstorm. If your soft metals show pitting and dents, your shingles almost certainly took similar impacts — even if you can’t see them from the ground.
Visible cue: Pitting on aluminum vents and eavestroughs

Compromised Flashing

High winds and hail can lift, dent, or tear the metal flashing around chimneys, skylights, and roof penetrations. Failed flashing is the single most common source of post-storm leaks — and it’s nearly impossible to spot without getting on the roof.
Visible cue: Dripping near chimney or skylight in next rain

Time matters.

Most insurance policies require claims to be filed within 12–24 months of the storm date. Unaddressed hail damage can affect manufacturer warranty coverage and accelerate roof deterioration. Get a professional inspection now. The documentation costs nothing and may save you tens of thousands later.
